Leica Q3 Monochrom

Full-frame fixed-lens compact with dedicated black-and-white sensor and Summilux 28mm f/1.7 lens.

The Q3 Monochrom is the Q-system body with the colour filter array removed from the sensor. The Bayer pattern that gives a colour camera its colour is replaced with a sensor that records light intensity directly — every pixel reads luminance, not red-green-blue. The result is a sensor that resolves more detail per pixel and tolerates higher ISOs than the same hardware in colour. The Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens, the autofocus system, and the body controls are shared with the standard Q3.

Position in the lineup

The Q3 Monochrom is for someone who works in black and white as a primary mode rather than a post-processing decision. Within Leica's lineup it sits alongside the M11 Monochrom and the older Monochrom bodies as the dedicated mono-sensor lineage. Compared to converting a colour file to black and white in Lightroom, the dedicated sensor produces deeper tonal range and cleaner shadow detail at high ISO — the difference is most visible in low light and in photographs where mid-tone separation carries the image.
